Dahlia ‘Little Beeswing’ – Dahlia is a rare heirloom pompon variety that brings vibrant colour and charm to late summer and autumn gardens. This exceptional cultivar produces perfectly formed, golf-ball sized blooms in a captivating combination of golden yellow petals dramatically marked with intense red flames. The pompon form creates tight, spherical flowers with petals that curve inward, giving each bloom a beautifully structured appearance that stands out in borders and cutting gardens alike.
This variety is exceptionally rare, having been recognised by Plant Heritage as their Rare Plant of the Month, and remains difficult to find in cultivation. The ‘Little Beeswing’ dahlia offers gardeners the opportunity to grow a piece of horticultural history, with its heirloom status adding both character and conversation value to any planting scheme. The striking bicolour flowers are produced in abundance throughout the flowering season, creating a warm, fiery display that attracts pollinators including bees and butterflies.
The compact nature of this dahlia makes it ideal for smaller gardens, containers, and front to middle border positions. The flowers are exceptional for cutting, holding their form beautifully in arrangements and providing long-lasting colour indoors. Each bloom emerges with its distinctive yellow and red colouration, creating a consistent yet naturally varied display as the flowers develop and mature on the plant.

Dahlia tubers can be planted 10cm deep in fertile well drained soil, outdoors in spring when the frost has passed, usually this is at the end of May, however in Scotland this is more typically early to mid-June. For rooted cuttings, wait a little longer – until the nights have warmed up. They love sun – find the sunniest place you can.
Improve your soil by adding organic matter, such as home-made compost or well-rotted manure, over the area you’re planting in. For tubers with shoots/potted tubers with shoots – space about 60cm (2ft) apart; planting so the tubers are 10-15cm (4-6in) deep. For rooted cuttings growing in pots -space a little closer at 50-60cm (20in-2ft) apart and the top of the compost in their pots is just a little (few mm) below the soil level.
Mulch after planting to conserve moisture. New shoots are vulnerable to slugs, aphids and even mice, so protect plants in their early stages of growth.
In areas where there is extreme cold, heavily mulch dahlias in Autumn & Winter.
Apply a high potash fertiliser every few weeks in the summer to help growth and they can be dead headed when necessary. Dahlia tubers can be planted 10cm deep in fertile well drained soil, outdoors in spring when the frost has disappeared.
