Dahlia tubers can be planted 10cm deep in fertile well drained soil, outdoors in spring when the frost has passed, usually this is at the end of May, however in Scotland this is more typically early to mid-June. For rooted cuttings, wait a little longer – until the nights have warmed up. They love sun – find the sunniest place you can.

Improve your soil by adding organic matter, such as home-made compost or well-rotted manure, over the area you’re planting in. For tubers with shoots/potted tubers with shoots – space about 60cm (2ft) apart; planting so the tubers are 10-15cm (4-6in) deep. For rooted cuttings growing in pots -space a little closer at 50-60cm (20in-2ft) apart and the top of the compost in their pots is just a little (few mm) below the soil level.

Mulch after planting to conserve moisture. New shoots are vulnerable to slugs, aphids and even mice, so protect plants in their early stages of growth.

In areas where there is extreme cold, heavily mulch dahlias in Autumn & Winter.

Apply a high potash fertiliser every few weeks in the summer to help growth and they can be dead headed when necessary. Dahlia tubers can be planted 10cm deep in fertile well drained soil, outdoors in spring when the frost has disappeared.
